DESCRIPTION::

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi announced that 38 individuals were arrested last year in connection with the country's wave of kidnappings, which saw a total of 13 cases during that period. Of the 13 attempts, seven were successful kidnappings, and the remaining six were thwarted by authorities, leading to the rescue of at least three people. Nyusi highlighted the evolving nature of this crime, emphasizing the need for collaboration from everyone, including affected families. The police operations resulted in the release of four captives and the seizure of firearms, ammunition, vehicles, and cell phones. Nyusi mentioned ongoing efforts in training officers, international cooperation, and legislative strengthening to combat organized crime. The wave of kidnappings in Mozambique began in 2011, targeting businesspeople and their families. Despite periods of stability, recent years have seen a resurgence of cases, with acknowledgments of police and magistrates' involvement, extending even to neighboring South Africa.
