Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed has expressed frustration over water cuts in certain regions, attributing the issue to lobbies infiltrating the state. During a meeting on July 29, 2024, Saïed threatened legal action against those responsible, whom he accuses of deliberately causing disruptions to undermine the state and civil peace. He described these actions as criminal and linked them to electoral campaigns by certain opponents aiming to destabilize the country.
Saïed criticized local and central officials for their negligence, especially concerning the timing of the cuts, which he claims coincide with the start of the presidential election campaign. He suggested that some individuals are aligned with foreign interests and are willing to take power at any cost, even at the expense of Tunisian lives. He emphasized that, under the 2022 Constitution, the president is responsible for setting state policies, with the government expected to implement them effectively.
Saïed also denounced the 2014 Constitution, claiming it weakened the state under foreign influence. He warned that those attempting to revert to the previous system with the support of lobbies will face swift judicial action. Saïed concluded by announcing upcoming trials, asserting that the law must be applied immediately to those who have committed crimes against the state.
