Nigerian police used tear gas to disperse anti-economic hardship protests in Abuja on Friday, August 2. The protests, which began on Thursday, August 1, have spread across several cities, significantly disrupting vehicular movements.

In Abuja, the protests turned chaotic, with security forces using tear gas to break up the demonstrators. Amidst the turmoil, a female protester collapsed and was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment. Despite the tear gas, two protesters remained to assist the woman, highlighting the intense atmosphere.

Nationwide, the protests have led to the closure of businesses, particularly in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital. Banks, offices, and markets were shuttered as demonstrators voiced their discontent with government reforms.

The first day of protests saw deadly clashes in northern Nigeria, resulting in at least 16 fatalities, according to SBM Intelligence. The demonstrations reflect widespread frustration with economic conditions and governance in the country.
