  1. Nigeria: Fuel Price Hike Triggers Filling Station Closures and Transport Fare Increases in Anambra State
Location:
Awka South, Anambra, Nigeria, Nigeria, West Africa
Incident Date: September 3, 2024
Instability Rating Max 5.0: 2.50
DESCRIPTION::

On September 3, 2024, most filling stations in Anambra State, including the capital Awka, closed after news spread of a directive from the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited to raise fuel prices from N617 to N897 per liter. This led to a significant increase in transport fares, with some routes nearly doubling in cost, forcing many commuters to walk part of their journeys. The shortage also caused many commercial vehicle operators to park their vehicles due to the unavailability of fuel.
