The World Bank warns that seven northern states in Nigeria face food insecurity in 2024 due to insecurity and armed conflicts. Three northeastern states and four northwestern states, including Borno, Adamawa, Yobe, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, and Zamfara, are particularly at risk. These states are projected to experience crisis food security levels, primarily due to persistent insecurity and deteriorating livelihoods. Some areas in Northeastern states like Abadam, Bama, and Guzamala may even reach emergency food security levels due to limited household food stock and restricted access to markets and humanitarian aid. The report also highlights a significant increase in inflation levels in low-income countries, including Nigeria, exacerbating the food crisis. The inability of farmers to access their farms in the north due to banditry adds to the challenges, leading to high food prices in the market.
