In the village of Motogatta, Tondikiwindi commune, Tillabéri region in Niger, 22 civilians were ruthlessly murdered by assailants who arrived on motorcycles, firing indiscriminately. The attack occurred around 4 p.m., on Sunday causing fatalities, including local defense militia members,

located in the southwest of Tondikiwindi, faces an upsurge in terrorist group attacks in the Three Borders region, near Mali. Despite increased military operations by Defense and Security Forces (FDS), terrorist groups, primarily from the Islamic State in the Sahel (EIS), target civilians, leading to heightened fear and mass displacements.

Authorities have implemented measures under the ongoing state of emergency since 2017, including a motorcycle ban and market closures, yet the situation persists. Terrorists also target public infrastructure, such as schools and health centers, combining attacks with the placement of improvised explosive devices on certain routes. The incident follows previous massacres, notably the killing of 69 vigilance committee members in November 2022 and an attack on two villages in Tondikiwindi in January 2021, resulting in approximately 100 deaths during the presidential election period.
