Three individuals have been sentenced to 30 years in prison by the Maputo City Judicial Court for their roles in the kidnapping of 56-year-old Manuel Manoj Jasvantilal in July 2023. The court also imposed a fine equivalent to two years' wages at five times the minimum wage on Nelson Tamele, Jerónimo Bila, and Joana Maria Macuácua. Additionally, they were ordered to pay three million meticais in compensation for kidnapping, criminal association, possession of prohibited weapons, and damages. The convicted individuals' assets, including three vehicles, five mobile phones, and a firearm, were confiscated by the state. The kidnapping took place on July 20, 2023, and Jasvantilal was rescued by SERNIC on July 25, 2023, leading to the arrest and subsequent conviction of the kidnappers.
