Approximately 13,000 households in the districts of Caia and Chemba, located in the central Mozambican province of Sofala, are experiencing hunger, as revealed by the President of the Sofala Provincial Assembly, Antónia Charre. During her visit to the Sofala offices of the country's relief agency, the Institute for Disaster Management and Reduction (INGD), Charre emphasized that families in these areas are resorting to consuming wild tubers, which she believes pose health risks, to cope with food insecurity. The lack of rain is identified as a significant factor contributing to food shortages, with the district of Caia being particularly affected. The INGD delegate in Sofala, Aristides Armando, announced the finalization of a strategic plan to assist families affected by the food crisis in the two districts. Actions will include rehabilitating boreholes, purchasing and installing drip irrigation systems, distributing manual irrigation systems, establishing greenhouses for vegetable production, and acquiring and distributing cassava and sweet potato seeds. The initiative will be carried out under the Post-Emergency Direct Social Support Programme, overseen by the National Social Welfare Institute (INAS).
