Incident Date: February 22, 2024
Instability Rating Max 5.0: 2.00
DESCRIPTION::

The new wave of armed violence in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province was a major topic during the resumption of parliamentary sessions, with opposition parties urging the government to establish mechanisms for dialogue with insurgents. The ruling party, Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), acknowledged the sporadic attacks by terrorists causing deaths, infrastructure destruction, and terror among the public. Frelimo emphasized the need for unity among Mozambicans to seek peace and security in Cabo Delgado, a region rich in natural resources. The main opposition party, Renamo, questioned whether the upsurge in violence aimed to disrupt the upcoming general elections and called for dialogue with armed groups. The Mozambique Democratic Movement (MDM) also stressed the importance of effective intelligence use and dialogue to understand and address the motivations behind the violence. Recent reports indicate insurgent attacks on villages and roads in Cabo Delgado, with the Islamic State (IS) claiming responsibility for a recent terrorist attack in Macomia that resulted in at least 20 casualties. Cabo Delgado has faced IS-led attacks for six years, prompting a military response supported by Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
