  1. Mozambique: insurgents take control of Mucojo village in Cabo Delgado
Location:
Mucojo, Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, Mozambique, Southern Africa
Incident Date: January 21, 2024
Instability Rating Max 5.0: 4.50
DESCRIPTION::

Islamic State-backed insurgents have taken control of Mucojo village in Cabo Delgado province after Mozambican Armed Defence Forces withdrew following accusations of killing suspected insurgents. The insurgents, strategically positioned along the 'Estrada Velha,' threaten the entire coast of Macomia and the Catupa forest. This marks a significant settlement under insurgent control since 2021. Security forces aim to regain control, with reported helicopter attacks near Mucojo, but ground efforts face challenges due to heavy rain affecting roads. The insurgents' capture compromises security forces' plans to deny them sea access in the vital Macomia coast.
