Between February 10 and 24, health authorities in Nampula province, Mozambique, recorded over 1,300 cases of hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. The most affected areas are Nacala Porto, Angoche, and Nampula City. Among the reported cases, 37.8% are from Nampula City, 36.6% from Angoche district, and 25.6% from Nacala Porto. The age group most affected is adults over 15 years (59.4%), followed by the 5-14 age group (27.9%). Of the cases, 51.7% are male. Fortunately, there have been no deaths or hospitalizations, indicating a positive prognosis for most cases. The disease is highly contagious, characterized by subconjunctival hemorrhage, eyelid swelling, congestion, redness, and eye pain. The outbreak is linked to a virus from the Adenovirus family and is transmitted through contact with contaminated individuals and the use of contaminated water for eye washing. In the last 24 hours, Nampula province registered 81 new cases, with the majority from Nampula City.
