Location:
Nampula, Nampula, Mozambique, Mozambique, Southern Africa
Incident Date: February 21, 2024
Instability Rating Max 5.0: 1.50
DESCRIPTION::

The entire fleet of 40 Tata buses in Nampula city, Mozambique, has been vandalized and rendered inoperative. Acquired by the Municipality of Nampula through a leasing agreement in 2014, the buses were intended for public passenger transport. Over the past five years, the buses have deteriorated, with evidence of cannibalization, as they are now missing wheels and essential components. The municipal government is burdened with debts exceeding 165 million meticais incurred during the acquisition. Despite the buses' well-preserved bodywork and seats, the absence of crucial components has halted public passenger transport in the city. The mayor expressed the intention to revive municipal public transport, acquire additional buses, and improve transport routes in the city. Meanwhile, efforts to address road conditions involve filling potholes with gravel, aiming to ensure minimal transit conditions within the next 100 days.
