As of 24 July 2024, the regional hospital in Beni Mellal recorded 21 deaths, with four occurring outside the prison walls and 17 within. Most of the deceased were elderly or had chronic diseases, and their health deteriorated due to high summer temperatures. The Regional Directorate for Health and Social Welfare in Béni Mellal-Khénifra has launched an investigation to understand the circumstances of these tragedies.
The department issued a statement following media reports of sudden deaths in the emergency room, advising caution and avoiding sun exposure during peak hours. The deaths occurred during a heatwave affecting several Moroccan regions, with temperatures reaching 48 degrees Celsius in some areas. The health services recommend seeking medical assistance when necessary and have assured local media of their availability to provide information on the situation.
