DESCRIPTION::

Mali's prison guards' union filed a 6-day strike notice with the Ministry of Labor, with the strike scheduled to begin on January 29 and will be renewed if the union's demands are not met.

Prison guards are demanding in particular the immediate application of the new salary scales adapted for prison administration agents. They also request the application of article 2 of the decree of October 18, 2021 which provides compensation for overtime for prison administration officials.

Unions request the adoption of the draft text amending the law of July 7, 2016 governing the status of prison administration officials, as well as its implementing decree. Finally, the union demands that prison guards working in military zones receive a special food bonus and an operating bonus.

The prison guards' strike could have significant consequences for the proper functioning of Malian prisons. In particular, it could lead to delays in the release of prisoners or disruptions in prison management.
