The 6th Gendarmerie Legion in Burkina Faso's East region has successfully dismantled fuel smuggling networks as part of the government's efforts to combat illegal activities funding terrorism. In mid-February 2024, the Gendarmerie conducted investigations, leading to the interception of three tricycles loaded with hydrocarbons destined for a terrorist-controlled area. Further investigations led to the discovery of a storage facility in Fada N'Gourma, where more than 300 20-liter containers of hydrocarbons were seized. The illegal operation involved purchasing fuel in Ouagadougou, packaging it in containers, transporting it to Fada N'Gourma, and selling it at significantly higher prices in insecure areas, yielding a profit margin of nearly 200%. Despite ongoing efforts to eradicate illicit activities in the East region, some individuals continue to engage in smuggling, potentially supplying terrorist groups. Four individuals involved in the network have been apprehended and will face legal consequences. The 6th Gendarmerie Legion remains committed to ensuring public security and combating illicit trades that fuel terrorist groups in the region. The public is urged to collaborate and report any suspicious activities through designated hotlines.
