The former president of the opposition party, the Rassemblement pour la Culture et la Démocratie (RCD), Mohcine Belabbas, has been under judicial supervision for two years. The investigating judge at the court of Hussein Dey in Algiers finally closed the investigation on 15 January 2024, according to his lawyer, Fetta Sadat. Subsequently, the case was referred to the Corrections Court for trial, although the trial date has not been set yet.
This case is related to the death of a Moroccan worker who was doing work in Mohcine Belabbas's apartment. He was summoned as part of a related investigation by the gendarmerie in the summer of 2020.
The former deputy and RCD leader had his parliamentary immunity revoked in October 2020, following a request from the notorious Minister of Justice, Belkacem Zeghmati. Belabbas took legal action against the minister, but the Council of State declared itself incompetent. Consequently, he was placed under judicial supervision on 10 January 2022.
The RCD party has faced government attacks, with its leaders claiming that their former president, Mohcine Belabbas, has been under pressure for his political views during the pro-democracy Hirak movement in which the party was heavily involved.
