On August 25, 2024, reports emerged of drone strikes in Tinzaouatène, close to the Algerian border, carried out by the Malian junta's forces and Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group. Separatists reported at least 21 civilian deaths, including 11 children, and numerous injuries, with significant property damage. Initial attacks targeted a pharmacy, followed by strikes on gatherings near the damaged site.
Local NGO officials confirmed at least 20 civilian deaths, including children, from the drone strikes. The area had already experienced heavy casualties during battles between separatists, jihadists, and Wagner Group forces from July 25 to 27, 2024, marking one of Wagner's most significant defeats in Africa. Following these battles, the Malian army conducted retaliatory drone strikes in Tinzaouatène, causing further civilian casualties.
Since 2023, armed separatist groups have lost control of several northern locales following a major offensive by the Malian army, culminating in the capture of Kidal.
