Location:
tripoli, libya, Libya, Maghreb
Incident Date: August 20, 2024
Instability Rating Max 5.0: 2.50
DESCRIPTION::

On August 20, 2024, Abdoulaye Bathily, the UN envoy to Libya, announced his resignation after just 18 months in the role, citing worsening conditions in the country and criticizing Libyan leaders for their lack of political will. Libya remains divided between two rival governments—one in Tripoli, recognized by the UN, and another in the East, aligned with military leader Khalifa Haftar. Bathily condemned the self-serving tactics of Libya's leaders and the foreign interference, particularly from Egypt, which undermined his efforts. As Bathily steps down, his deputy, Stephanie Koury, is expected to serve as interim envoy, although her effectiveness may be limited without full UN Security Council support.
